Teresa Mincione is coming to Hopwaarts

Casavecchia and Pallagrello: two old grape varieties from Campania that you rarely come across outside the region. In Castel Campagnano, Teresa Mincione turns them into three wines aged in amphora. Hopwaarts is bringing them to the Dutch drinks trade.

Three lives, one winery

Teresa Mincione calls them her three lives: lawyer, wine taster and winemaker. You will find them on the label of her Casavecchia, in dots of three colours. Her principle in the cellar is to take away rather than add, so that you taste the grape and the place and the wine stays light and pure.

Vineyards surrounded by woodland

The largest plot, about six hectares, lies in Monticelli di Squille near Castel Campagnano and is completely surrounded by woodland. Vigna Monticelli was planted in 1987 with Pallagrello Bianco, Pallagrello Nero and Casavecchia. Vigna Bosco Agnese followed in 2008 with Pallagrello Bianco. A smaller Casavecchia vineyard lies in Pontelatone, on pale clay among oaks and olive trees. The vines are trained on pergolas, on sandy loam at 160 to 190 metres, and the soil is worked with organic farming techniques.

Grapes with a story

Casavecchia owes its name to a legend: in the early twentieth century a very old vine is said to have been found beside an old, ruined house in Pontelatone, and all later vines descend from it. The grape yields little and hardly thrives outside a handful of villages in the province of Caserta. Pallagrello, which exists as a white and a red variety, was a favourite at the Bourbon court. King Ferdinand IV planted both in his Vigna del Ventaglio near the Royal Palace of Caserta. The name refers to its small, round berries.

Three wines from amphora

La luna e il ventaglio is the Pallagrello Bianco, Nulla è per caso the Casavecchia and Sabbie al vento the Pallagrello Nero. All three are IGT Terre del Volturno, hand-picked from vines more than thirty years old and aged in amphora. The labels are works by the artist Luca Bellandi.
